Meet the Owner/Chef Jorge Calvo
Chef Jorge Calvo owned and operated numerous restaurants in Peru before bringing his family and his culinary experience to St. Louis. With longtime friends Sherry & Paul Sawchak, Jorge and his wife Nori opened the original Mango in 2004. Much of Mango's signature style is a direct result of the Calvos belief in a core family-business philosophy. Not only is restaurant operated by several family members, but the Calvos make it a point to treat their team and patrons like family as well, presenting a warm and inviting family-oriented feel to their restaurant and service.
History
Established in 2004 in a cozy suburban neighborhood, the original Mango restaurant in Shrewsbury became a popular dining destination offering authentic Peruvian cuisine and what has been hailed as the original fusion food. For seven years the chef's imaginative creations impressed foodies and locals alike.
Now in our new location in the trendy Washington Avenue Loft District in downtown St. Louis, Chef Jorge Calvo and his culinary team, all Peruvian, bring the native flavors of their country to this hip, urban hot spot. The approachable menu offers something for everyone; from fresh seafood and steaks to numerous vegetarian dishes. Winner of "St. Louis' Best South American Cuisine" by Alive, Sauce, and Riverfront Times Magazines and "Diner's Choice Award" by OpenTable, Mango's dishes are rich in flavor and savory spices that dazzle the senses. Unlike other South American foods, Peruvian cuisine gains influences from Spanish, Italian, African and Japanese cultures and combines them with a variety of native peppers and fresh herbs to create mouth watering, flavorful dishes without overwhelming the palate with heat.
Mango features non-smoking indoor, outdoor and private dining areas, all reflecting a contemporary urban style with Peruvian accents.
